prize-giving (Scope note)

The term refers to the representation of the act of prize-giving, or of an actual prize awarded, in several contexts, but more usually that of rewarding victors in athletic and other types of contests. In the Classical World, woollen fillets and wreaths were often used to denote victory; these are included within the term as well as the giving of valuable objects such as metal vessels. The term 'classical games' or 'education' etc. should also be used to indicate the context where appropriate. For lottery prizes, see 'gambling/gaming'.
