Visiting as a Member

When visiting the Museum, there is a fast track lane for Members and ticket holders at both entrances, so you can avoid waiting in visitor queues during busy periods. Upon arrival, please remember to have your Membership card, or proof of Membership, ready to show to Museum staff.

Members who are bringing luggage with them are encouraged to check the Museum’s cloakroom policies as these may have changed since your last visit. In particular, please note that wheeled luggage of any size is not permitted on Museum premises.

At the moment booking is not essential, however, all of our special exhibitions can get busy from time to time. Weekends and school holidays are among the most popular times to visit. If an exhibition reaches capacity and you’re not on the guaranteed entry list, we may ask you to collect a ticket for entry at a later time on the same day. We are always happy to suggest some other displays in the Museum for you to visit while you wait.

Visiting an exhibition

You may wish to consider visiting an exhibition during one of our out-of-hours opportunities or book one of our curator-led tours, listed below. Exhibitions also tend to be quieter on weekdays or on a Friday night. Although the last entry for ticket purchasers is 80 minutes before an exhibition closes, Members can enter an exhibition at any time until closing (17.30 daily, 20.20 on Fridays). Members will need to book online in advance to see an exhibition at these times.

The Citi exhibition

I object: Ian Hislop's search for dissent

6 September 2018  20 January 2019

Private Eye editor Ian Hislop investigates objects of dissent, from graffiti on a Babylonian brick to a banknote with hidden rude words, from satirical Turkish shadow puppets to a recently acquired ‘pussy’ hat worn on a women’s march. See what tales these objects tell – sometimes deadly serious, often humorous, always with conviction.

The BP exhibition

I am Ashurbanipal: king of the world, king of Assyria

8 November 2018  24 February 2019

King Ashurbanipal of Assyria (r. 668–c. 631 BC) was the most powerful man on earth. He described himself in inscriptions as ‘king of the world’, and his reign from the city of Nineveh (now in northern Iraq) marked the high point of the Assyrian empire, which stretched from the shores of the eastern Mediterranean to the mountains of western Iran.
